Preparing for a Dental Surgical Procedure at Our Practice

We understand the anxiety that usually accompanies hearing the words oral surgery. However, you have nothing to worry about when you’re in the capable hands of Dr. Kevin L. Norris, D.M.D. Our staff will provide you with pre and post-surgery instructions to make the experience as anxiety-free and comfortable as possible. You would prepare for a dental surgical procedure the same as any other dental treatment in our office. One notable exception would be arranging for transportation back home. Depending on your procedure, we offer various forms of sedation dentistry, which may impair your ability to drive. Not getting dental surgery when you need it can lead to worsening conditions.

Avoid Painful Crowding Issues With Wisdom Teeth Removal

Your mouth is meant to accommodate 28 teeth comfortably, but when your third molars (wisdom teeth) come in during your teen or young adult years, it can cause some issues. Sometimes, wisdom teeth come in sideways or press against your other teeth, causing you significant discomfort and even some dental damage to the surrounding teeth and gums. Wisdom teeth removal is usually necessary to avoid the pain of impacted wisdom teeth and other complications. This type of oral surgery is quite common, and you should start to feel better within a few days. However, it may take about a month for your mouth to heal completely, during which time you may just need to avoid chewy, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate your mouth.

Restore Your Smile With Natural-Looking Dental Implants

Whether you’ve suffered tooth loss due to decay or trauma, dental implants offer a natural-looking solution to restore your smile. Using a titanium rod in your jawbone to hold them in place, dental implants look, feel, and function like your natural teeth. You won’t have to worry about losing bone tissue or your teeth shifting out of position with this long-term treatment option. However, you’ll still need to maintain good oral hygiene habits and visit our dentist regularly for checkups. For the best results, you should also avoid chewing hard foods to keep your dental implants in excellent shape.

Bone Grafting May Be Necessary Before Dental Implants

Many of our patients desiring dental implants may require bone grafting first to make the procedure more successful. Bone grafting involves taking bone from elsewhere in your body or from a donor and inserting it into your jawbone to help support the new dental implants. Bone grafting is also common with tooth extractions and saving teeth that are at risk of coming loose due to periodontal disease. Bone grafting isn’t as terrible as it sounds. It requires a small incision in the gum tissue, and you’ll be given local anesthesia to make the procedure more relaxing. You’ll be back to normal in practically no time!

Sedation Dentistry Will Put You at Ease During Oral Surgery

Our office provides sedation dentistry to put patients at ease during dental treatments and surgeries. Your comfort and safety are chief among our concerns, so we offer several options to suit your preferences. If you opt for oral conscious sedation, you’ll be given one or more pills to take orally before your procedure. We also have nitrous oxide (laughing gas) available via a nose mask and general anesthesia administered by a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA). During sedation dentistry, you may be awake during the procedure, but you shouldn’t feel anything, making it ideal for those with dental anxiety or bad gag reflexes. Sleep dentistry refers to sedation that renders you unconscious during the procedure. General anesthesia administered through an IV is an example of sleep dentistry.
